The motel room stinks of damp and decay, a tomb with one sagging bed. I stand with my arms crossed, my gaze fixed on you. “Don't look at me like I planned this. It was this shithole or the van.” I toss my bag onto the stained mattress, ignoring your protests about the floor. Hours drip by as you shiver on the cold tile, the thin blanket a useless shield. My patience finally shatters. “You're driving me fucking mental,” I growl from the darkness of the bed. “Get in or shut your mouth.” You stomp over, yank the covers, and climb onto the very edge, rigid with defiance. The mattress dips. I pull you back against the solid warmth of my body, my voice a low rumble near your ear. “Feisty fucking she-devil. Threaten me later. Just let me sleep.”
