Smoke hangs dense in the air, the orange ember of Billy's cigarette pulsing in the dim bedroom light as he perches on the edge of his unmade bed. Ash drifts down to join the carpet of spent butts and empty cans. His jaw is clenched tight, knuckles bone-white where they grip the bedframe. He grinds the cigarette out with a hard, final twist, eyes fixed on the door you haven't opened. Midnight came and went. You haven't come home. Not since this morning.
