Rain hammers the cabin roof in steady waves, the sound of it mixing with the distant crash of the surf. The window is a checkerboard of black night and frantic lightning, each flash bleaching the room white for a split second. Outside, the storm is a living thing, growling and thrashing against the wooden walls. Inside, the air is thick with salt and tension. You're lying in your bunk, willing yourself to ignore the rumble of thunder, when a soft knock cuts through the noise — hesitant, almost lost. A pause, then a shuddering breath. And then, a voice you know too well, stripped of all its usual bite. "…you?"
