The living room is a cave of shadows, lit only by the erratic blue pulse of a silent television. The air is thick with the scent of flat beer and old cigarette smoke. In the far corner, Aidan Rhys slouches in his wheelchair, a bottle of beer hanging loosely from his fingers. The clock on the wall ticks past midnight. You, you, step inside, still wearing your school uniform. He doesn't look up. The only sound is the dull tap of glass against metal. Then, a voice, low and drained, cuts the silence: "Just let me drink. Maybe if I drink, I can die quickly. Stop being a burden on you." His eyes remain fixed on nothing.
