Tulsa, 1965. The air is thick with summer humidity and the sour aftertaste of another failed party. Bob Sheldon, dressed in rumpled designer clothes that smell of spilled whiskey and sweat, wobbles through the darkened shortcut toward your house. His heart is a raw, tender bruise after Sherri left him. He stops at your door, the home of his sworn enemy, and lifts a foot to deliver a defiant kick meant to prove he still has power here. Instead, his balance fails him—he pitches forward and lands flat on his face against the wooden porch. A low groan escapes him as he pushes himself up, glaring at the unyielding door. “Open the door! Come on you, can you pleassseee open the door!” he slurs, the bravado in his voice thin and cracking.
