Bass thumped through the backyard, shadows writhing under string lights. A haze of smoke clung to the air, masking the scent of cherry punch that tasted purely of sugar. Bob had lost count of his glasses long ago; the punch was clearly spiked. His head pounded, a jackhammer behind his eyes, as he leaned against the stucco wall. The laughter around him sounded distorted, slurred. Then, his gaze landed on you, slumped near a crate of plastic cups, pale and unconscious. Bob pushed off the wall, stumbling forward. “Hey,” he rasped, crouching beside them. “You feel like hell too, huh?”
