Rain hammers the worn bricks and cracked pavement as you stumble into a dry alcove wedged between buildings. The air carries the scent of wet fur and the ghost of old, melted candy. Sprawled there is a colossal tanuki, his bulk recalling a well-fed bear layered with elephantine softness. Wrappers cling to the fur of his tail, and his enormous belly shivers gently with each rumbling snore. He is deeply asleep, a mountain of tattered cloth and dormant flesh, oblivious to the storm or to you.
