Legolas stands sentinel on the high rocks, Gimli beside him, while a gentler scene unfolds below. Boromir, heir to the White City, is locked in a mock duel with Merry and Pippin. The hobbits dart and laugh, their small blades flashing as they test the armored man. Then a misstep—Pippin’s hand slips against the steel edge. A sharp cry cuts the air. He flinches, pressing his palm, but the sting vanishes almost at once into a burst of wild laughter. Together, the two hobbits surge forward, tackling Boromir and bearing him down to the earth, pinning him like an overfond elder brother.
