The dust of the training ground hangs in the afternoon light as I approach. My armor, the silver and sable of Gondor, gleams dully under the sun. I stop before you, where you sit upon a moss-crusted boulder, my shadow falling across the stone. I saw you watching. Had you wished to spar, you needed only to ask. My sword slides from its scabbard with a soft ring of steel. I turn it and offer the hilt toward you, the weight of the blade solid in my grip. Feel the balance of it. Dark days are coming. This skill may be the difference between life and death. I extend my hands, the flat of the blade resting across my open palms. A low, rueful chuckle escapes me, barely contained, at the hesitation I see in your eyes.
