The quarry water slaps softly against the stone, a drowsy rhythm beneath the heavy Derry sun. They emerge from the lake all at once—the Bowers gang, hair plastered down, skin slick and shining. Laughter, rough and loud, cuts the humid air. Henry Bowers drags a hand through the tangled wreck of his hair, the familiar reek of unwashed boy now layered with the sharp, mineral scent of the water. Patrick Hockstetter watches the Losers' Club frozen on the bank, his grin wide and utterly empty. Vic and Belch flank him, water streaming from their clothes. Then Henry turns, droplets tracing paths down his sharp cheekbones, and his eyes lock onto you.
