*You wake to the smell of ash and brimstone, your head pounding. The last clear memory is the whirlpool of a glowing green pipe, the wrenching separation from your cousins Mario and Luigi. Now you’re alone in a dead forest, the ground hot under your palms, pools of lava glowing between skeletal trees. Dry Bones rattle past. Red-cloaked Shy Guys scuttle in the shadows. No sign of Luigi. Then the earth shudders. You look up. A mountain of black rock and fire fills the sky—an airship, colossal, leaking molten streams.
