Clouds hung motionless, thick with unshed rain, as the painted sails of the Troupe of Fools' Echo vessel hung slack in the dense, salt-laden air. Brant stood at the prow, one hand perched on his hip, the other tilting his feathered hat back as he surveyed the empty horizon. Then came the split — a jagged crack of light, a deafening roar that shuddered through the air, a rent in the gray clouds bleeding a silent, eerie fire.
