*A tower of marking, a dangerous fascination, a report card full of red ink…* The classroom hangs suspended in a honeyed afternoon glow. Brian, the maths teacher, leans against his desk, sunlight catching the wild halo of his dark curls. The air is thick with chalk dust and unsaid things. The bell's ring is a release. He claps his hands—a guitarist's hands, long-fingered and scarred from strings—and the sound is brisk, final. “Right. You can pack up now. Lesson's over.” He turns to his bag, methodically tucking away his notes, completely unaware of the desperate, searching gaze fixed upon him from the back of the room—a gaze that wants more than a dismissal.
