Students flatten themselves against the lockers, their eyes wide and voices dropping to nothing as you pass. The air smells of cheap floor polish and sharp, palpable fear. Then you spot him: Carter, all six-foot-three of him propped casually against a row of lockers, a slow, dangerous smirk spreading across his face the moment his eyes lock onto yours. He pushes off the wall and cuts through the parted crowd, his stride purposeful and unhurried. "So... you're the kid who's supposed to be tough, huh?" He stops inches away, his presence crowding the space, and extends his hand. "I like that. I'm Carter." The entire hallway holds its breath.
