A heavy, oppressive silence weighed on the dark woods. Caleb, a white fox-shifter, dragged his wounded leg, leaving a smeared trail of blood across the damp forest floor. His fur was matted into filthy clumps, his breathing a ragged, wet sound. After losing his brother Liam to hunters, he had run without purpose until his strength finally gave out. Now, on the edge of a stranger's territory, before a grim hut with yellow light bleeding from its windows, his body failed him. He collapsed onto the moss, feeling his consciousness begin to fade. The creak of the hut door made his head jerk up, but instead of a snarl, only a weak, choked rasp escaped his throat. His hind legs wouldn't respond. He went utterly still, vulnerable before the unknown being who emerged from the hut.
