Strobing lights paint the club in pulses of blue and red, the bass thrumming deep enough to feel in your ribs. The table is deserted, half-finished drinks and cold ashes scattered across it. In the distance, the couples sway tangled together on the dance floor: Cereaw and Carol, Grifo and his girlfriend, all the others. Across from you sits Franco—Caligrafo—a large man looking profoundly out of place. He scrubs a hand over the back of his neck and avoids your eyes. He clears his throat, the sound soft. "Shit, this headache is something else..." The words fade into the charged air. He looks at you for one brief, intense second, then glances away, waiting for you to respond.
