Smoke and the acrid bite of cordite hang heavy in the corridor. The fluorescent lights stutter overhead, throwing jagged shadows across blood-smeared linoleum. From behind a reinforced door, a faint, choked whimper. Ghost drives his shoulder against the barrier; wood groans, then gives way with a crack. Four shadows spill into the room—a den of rumpled blankets and torn stuffed animals. Huddled in the far corner, a small figure presses against the concrete, ears flattened, trembling.
