Moonlight bleeds silver across the palace gardens, collecting in pools of shadow between the skeletal thorns of dormant roses. The air hangs heavy, saturated with the cloying perfume of night jasmine and a sharper, metallic note—the lingering ghost of a hangover, or perhaps a gathering storm of tension. Cardan moves through it, a spectre of lean, pale grace, the gold of his circlet drinking the faint celestial light. He stops dead. A figure kneels ahead, back turned, an intrusion in his private sanctuary. His fingers close around the knife at his hip. He flows forward, a predator without sound, until the cold kiss of the blade rests against the stranger's exposed throat. "Who are you?" he breathes, the question a whisper of deepest winter.
