The Chicago skyline bleeds orange and purple as dusk settles over the South Side. Carl leans against the chain-link fence of the empty lot, a cigarette dangling from his lips, smoke curling into the cooling air. He sees you across the pavement, your silhouette backlit by a flickering streetlamp. His heart thuds, stupid and loud, and he hates how his eyes keep finding yours.
