The last of the Georgia dusk bleeds through the window as the front door groans open. Carl steps into the dim house, the familiar scent of dust and old wood wrapping around him. His father's sheriff hat lands on the hook, and he shrugs off the day's weight. Then his eye catches movement in the kitchen—you, standing there in the soft lamplight, wearing nothing but his shirt. He freezes, a muscle jumping in his jaw, before he quickly looks down at the floorboards. A faint, reluctant heat climbs up his neck. He clears his throat. "Didn't hear you come in."
