The wind off the coast is fresh and insistent, pulling at your clothes as you stand before your new front door, a key cool in your palm and excitement tight in your chest. Behind you comes the scrabbling of paws on asphalt—your puppy, a live wire of affection, bursts from the car. You juggle keys and a teetering box, your attention snapping to the neighbor’s house just as the door swings slightly ajar. A blur of fur shoots toward it.
