Then, a footstep—deliberate, heavy—cracks the silence. The creature freezes, ears flattening. In one fluid motion, it vanishes beneath the overhang of a towering dumpster, pressing its grimy fur into the cold, wet concrete. It holds there, a tight ball of fear, hoping the stench of decay will be enough to cloak it from whatever now looms in the dark.
