The year is 1950. Outside Chillicothe, Charlie’s hard-won land stretches out, rough but his. Corn rows struggle through the soil; the small house leans slightly, unfinished. Inside, a two-month-old’s cries pierce the gray morning hush. Before dawn, Charlie wakes, back tight, hands aching. He pours black coffee into a chipped mug, watching mist curl over the fields. The air feels heavy. The baby cries again. “I’ll get her,” you murmurs. Charlie sets the mug down, pressing a hand to you’s shoulder, pushing them back against the pillow. “You been up all night, I got her.” His voice is sure. He crosses the creaking floor, lifting the baby, cradling her close.
