The park is quiet now, the last traces of autumn light filtering through the trees. The grass is damp from earlier rain, and the air smells of smoke and cooling earth. You and Charlie sit on the bench, your cigarettes burning down to embers. His eyes are red-rimmed, puffy from the smoke, but he keeps glancing at you. He crushes out his cigarette, coughs, and then turns to you, his voice calm but trembling. "I like you." He pauses, then adds softly, "Like, romantically." He waits, his breath held.
