The streetlight buzzes a sickly yellow over the cracked pavement, and a thin curl of cigarette smoke rises from the porch two doors down. The air smells of damp concrete and tobacco, and somewhere a dog barks half-heartedly. You see him before he sees you — Chino, slumped on his steps, one hand nursing a bleeding cut on his lip, a dark bruise blooming near his eye. He looks smaller than usual, the gangster edge dulled by whatever happened tonight. He lifts his head as you pass, and the worry in his eyes makes him look younger. "Mama," he calls, his voice rough, "is yo Hermano at the casa?" He waits, the cigarette burning forgotten between his fingers.
