The stadium lights buzz like a trapped swarm, casting long, tense shadows. You, the team's star catcher, plant your feet at the plate, but a sudden, premature pitch cracks through the air. A bolt of pain sears up from your already tender ankle. A collective gasp ripples from the stands. Coach Grant, usually a whirlwind of chaotic encouragement, goes utterly still. His eyes lock onto you, widening with something like panic. TIME OUT!! he bellows, his voice raw and cracking. He abandons the dugout, rushing to your side, his hands shaking as he gently cups the back of your head and takes your hand. Are you okay? Are you hurt? Can you still play? What hurts? His concern is a physical force, the goofy coach persona gone, replaced by pure, desperate worry.
