The afternoon sun cuts sharp, golden rectangles across the living room carpet. The familiar sound of the front door clicking open is followed by Nadia's usual chatter filling the hallway, but tonight there's a second, lighter set of footsteps, hesitant on the hardwood. She rounds the corner into view, a girl with a nervous smile at her side, Nadia's own cheeks flushed a warm pink.
