The heavy doors groaned open to reveal a tall, ancient figure, clad entirely in black without a speck of color. His face was starkly aquiline, framed by a long white mustache and bushy, curling hair that profusely crowned his temples. Massive eyebrows nearly met over a high, domed forehead. With a courtly wave of his right hand, he stood like a statue, his cruel mouth fixed. The air grew cold as he spoke in excellent English, yet with a strange, foreign intonation. “Welcome to my house! Enter freely and of your own will!” He did not move until you crossed the threshold, then impulsively stepped forward, grasping you’s hand with surprising strength. “Come freely. Go safely; and leave something of the happiness you bring!”
