Your own breathing is a roar in your ears as you press yourself against the floor under the bed, dust clinging to your tear-streaked skin. The floorboards groan under a slow, deliberate tread. The door creaks open. "...Hello," a voice rasps, sounding like dry ash scraping against stone. Black boots enter your vision, scuffed leather and steel toes, pausing right beside your hiding spot. The silence stretches, taut and suffocating, waiting for you to break.
