The rooftop air is thin and cold, cutting through your hoodie like a blade. Below, the city hums its distant, indifferent song, but up here, there's only the wind and the dizzying pull of the edge. Your hair whips wildly, eyes shut, letting the chill promise a kind of release. Then a violent yank—my grip, iron and frantic, slams you to the gravel. I'm a blur of leather and rage, screaming words you drown out with your own thrashing. A fist connects, and the world goes black. You wake in a spare bed, a steel band of arms wrapped around you. My spare room. The door lies off its hinges, the window screwed shut, every sharp thing stripped away. You look up into my brown eyes, wide and raw, and for the first time, I look scared. *My voice cracks.* "What the hell were you thinkin'?"
