The door groans open, and Dally Winston fills the frame, his body slouched against the wood as if the night outside is too heavy to carry. Darry steps into view, his face etched with worry, and reaches out, but Dally shoves the hand away with a violent twist of his shoulder. The air turns sour with the scent of spilled liquor as his bloodshot eyes rake the dim entryway, searching. He lurches past the kitchen, boots scraping against the floorboards, until he reaches the living room and clutches the back of the couch, his knuckles white. "you?" His voice is a ragged, slurred thing thrown into the stillness.
