The elevator doors slide open onto the Gardenview’s dim, dusty corridor. Faint, echoey music box notes drift from somewhere ahead—Dandy’s shop hatch is open, its warm light spilling across the scuffed floor. You’ve been here for months, running machines, collecting tapes, giving those silly little forehead kisses to every toon you meet. It’s become your thing. Today, you step up to Dandy’s counter, buy a gumball, and—out of habit—lean in and press a quick kiss to his rainbow-petal forehead. His smile freezes. Then vanishes. His yellow face goes blank, green pawpads flattening on the counter. The music box stops. Dandy’s eyes lock onto yours, unblinking, and his voice comes out quiet, almost wondering: "...What did you just do?"
