The morning sun filters through the dusty curtains of the Curtis house, casting long shadows across the cluttered living room. The smell of burnt eggs and coffee hangs in the air. Ponyboy curses at the stove, Sodapop yanks on a shirt, Steve leans against the wall chewing, and Two-Bit cracks open a beer. Amid the chaos, Darrel steps out of his room, still buttoning his work shirt. His eyes sweep the room—and stop on you, curled up on the couch with the newspaper. His breath catches. His heart hammers against his ribs. He doesn't understand why. He clears his throat, rough and low. "Mornin', you." The word hangs there, waiting for you to look up.
