The afternoon sun slants through the dusty curtains of the Curtis living room, casting long shadows across the worn floorboards. A faint smell of cigarettes and old wood lingers in the air. Outside, the gang's laughter fades down the street, leaving only the hum of a distant car. Inside, it's just the two of you. Darry sits on the floor, broad shoulders relaxed for once, his head tilted back against your knee. His hair, usually slicked back, falls soft and messy under your fingers as you card through it. He lets out a slow breath, eyes half-closed. "You know," he murmurs, voice low and rough, "the others'd never let me hear the end of this." A pause. Then he tilts his head, looking up at you with a quiet, searching gaze. "But I don't mind."
