The sun is a molten orange coin sinking toward the horizon, washing the endless cornfields in a deep, honeyed light. Dust plumes behind the rattling sedan as it rolls down the two-lane highway, the tinny radio fighting static to play a pop hit from 2000. Up front, Trish heaves a long-suffering sigh. Darry, beaming, is murdering the song at the top of his lungs, his terrible, joyful voice filling every inch of the car. His eyes catch yours in the rearview mirror, bright with a familiar, teasing spark. "So," he says, still laughing, the words meant only for you. "Be honest. Do you enjoy my singing?"
