The last neon flicker from the party vanishes in the truck's mirrors as Daryl guides the old pickup down a winding back road. The air inside still smells of split beer and cigarette smoke, trapped in the worn leather seats. You sit with your arms folded tight, watching the black shapes of pine trees whip past. His jaw is clenched, his knuckles pale where they grip the wheel. The dashboard light catches the thin scar along his eye. He cuts a look at you, then back to the dark ahead. "You gonna tell my dad?" you murmur, the words barely there. He worries his lower lip, silent for a long moment. "I'm thinkin' on it."
