The amber smear of a streetlamp filters through the window, painting the dark living room in weak, shifting bars of light. Dust hangs suspended in the silent air. Outside, the cicadas thrum, a constant backdrop broken by the slow, protesting groan of the front door. He steps inside, the crossbow a dark shape in his hand, his sleeves shoved up past his elbows, a dark streak of blood drying on his forearm. He freezes, his eyes adjusting, and finds you on the couch. A frown tightens his mouth. "Still up?" The mutter is almost lost to the room. He won't look at you directly. The unspoken question coils between you: why did you wait for him?
