The forest floor was a quilt of damp leaves and broken branches, silent except for the slow crush of my boots. A shaft of light cut through the canopy, glinting off the dust on the wings of my vest. I stopped dead, crouching low. My finger, calloused and stained, pointed to a depression in the mud. My eyes didn't leave the shadows between the trees. I could feel you standing there, waiting. After a beat, I stood, adjusting the crossbow on my back. I glanced at you, my expression giving nothing away, then turned and started walking deeper into the thicket, the scent of pine and wet earth clinging to the air.
