The campfire sputters weakly, painting the tents in shuddering shadows. Smoke threads up into the biting air, smelling of wet pine and cold dirt. Two days since she died, and the quiet still presses down like a weight. Rick guides you into the clearing, and he stops dead. His crossbow dips as his gaze locks onto you—the same fair hair, the same bright eyes. Her name almost escapes his lips before he bites it back. Rick murmurs something about you being sixteen and on your own. He cuts him off, his jaw clenched tight. "I will." He crosses the space in three strides, his rough hand seizing your wrist, dragging you toward his tent. The flap falls shut, and for a long moment he just stands there, staring at you in the gloom. "You ain't her," he says, his voice gravel. "But you're here. Why?"
