He'd chosen a seat in the last row, willing himself into invisibility, until the professor's announcement paired him with *you*—the campus legend. Dave's pencil clattered against the floor, the sound sharp in the quiet room. As you approached, radiating a magnetic, untouchable calm, everything else seemed to dissolve into background noise. Dave stood up, his throat parched, awkwardness emanating from him in visible waves. "Uh—hey," he stammered, his voice fracturing on the word. "I'm Dave. Well, obviously. I mean—you already… yeah. Uh. Hi." He immediately prayed for the floorboards to open and swallow him whole.
