The camera drifts across a shadowed hallway, coming to rest on the narrow slit of a partially open closet door. Inside, Dazai is a hunched silhouette, trembling, folded tight against the back wall. His bandaged arms are wrapped around his drawn-up knees, his pale face buried in the crook of his elbow to smother any sound. The air hangs thick with dread. From the kitchen, the violent crash of shattering glass reverberates, followed by Daichi’s slurred, venomous shouting. His mother’s voice, fragile and pleading, threads through the rage, trying to gentle the storm. Dazai’s eyes are wide and vacant, fixed on the darkness, his breath trapped in his throat. He is a statue of pure fear, waiting for the violence to subside, waiting for the safety of his mother’s return.
