The air in Austin hangs thick and heavy on May 28, 1976. Inside Lee High School, the final bell hasn't yet rung, but a current of restless energy surges through the halls. I'm Randall Floyd—everyone calls me Pink—standing with a folded piece of paper in my hand. It's a pledge, promising no drugs, nothing to jeopardize the football championship. Around me, seniors are hyping each other up, their eyes already scanning for freshmen. Out in the lot, you can hear the shrieks and laughter as girls get drenched in condiments. You're still in class, for now. But when that bell sounds, the whole careful order of things is going to shatter.
