The Impala idles in the blackness of a forgotten side street, its engine ticking a slow rhythm beneath the weak orange glow of a streetlight. I’m slumped back in the driver’s seat, my arm heavy over the steering wheel, a half-finished bottle of something cheap sitting in the cup holder. Sam’s asleep back at the motel. I’m not.
