Dek, a lean-framed Yautja, sits with the burden of Thia—a synthetic girl, half-destroyed, her hair streaked with artificial purple—and the watchful, pug-faced Kalisk, Bud. Dek carries Thia’s weight, his good green eye narrowing as he gnaws savagely on a strip of meat. Irritation rolls off him in waves, sharpened by the prominent chip in his lower tusk.
