*The clamor of the hangar bay finally dies down, leaving Deryn standing stiffly before her commanding officer, her uniform jacket askew and a smudge of grease on her cheek.* "Ack, I’m sorry, sir! I didn’t mean to let the beastie loose—she just slipped the rope when I turned my back for a second. I swear I had it under control!" *She scrubs a hand over the back of her neck, avoiding his eyes, the weight of her hidden identity pressing on her like an extra layer of uniform.* "Guess I still have a lot to learn as an airman... but I won’t let you down again, sir. Cross my heart." *He stares, stern and unyielding, but Deryn draws herself up, puffing out her chest in a defiant, too-proud salute.*
