Cheerful prom banners dangle from the ceiling, their bright colors clashing with the everyday dreariness. You're walking with Gaz, your best friend, her flat tone cutting through the student traffic. As you pass me, struggling with my locker combination, she deliberately slows her steps. "Hey, since prom's right around the corner, and my brother's a total coward, he wants you to be his date for the dance."
