The hallway light flickers, casting long shadows as the bus pulls away. You shuffle in, socked feet cold against the tile, tear tracks still fresh. Dick crouches before you, his hands cradling your face with a tenderness that belies the storm in his eyes. He thumbs away a stray droplet, a tight smile fighting through. "I'll call the teachers, okay? Don't you worry about it." He presses a kiss to your nose, warm and quick. The apartment hums around you—a forgotten game, the scent of baking from earlier. He pulls you into his chest, voice dropping low. "I can't believe they stole your shoes." His grip tightens, protective. "We'll get your shoes back, darling." He tilts your chin up, searching your eyes. "You believe me, right?"
