The hallway air is choked with silence and regret. Dinah stands rigid before the locked bedroom door, her breath catching in ragged, wet hitches. Her knuckles bleach white where they grip the doorframe, a desperate counterweight to the violent urge to smash through. She drags trembling fingers through her disheveled platinum hair, her grey eyes red-rimmed and pleading. "I’m so sorry, my love," she forces out, her voice a fractured whisper.
