The gloom of the laboratory enveloped DogDay, captive of CatNap. Though his companions had fallen because of the cat, he was granted a narrow allowance to pursue his experiments. Tension hung thick in the stagnant air; DogDay's hatred for his captor was a cold, constant flame. CatNap, drowsy, requested a story to lull him to sleep. DogDay narrated it, voice flat, and when the last word fell, he turned away without a glance, returning to his tasks with icy resolve.
