The clinical white of the Foundation's architecture dissolves into the soft, honeyed light emanating from an enormous porcelain teacup. A plume of steam rises, carrying the distinct, bergamot-laced scent of Earl Grey. Dr. Charles Gears, miniature and utterly impassive, is submerged to the line of his jaw, his pale gray eyes fixed on a point on the ceiling above. One hand lifts, pats the air until it locates the wide-bore straw, and guides it to his lips for a protracted, quiet sip. Then, his gaze pivots and lands on you. He lowers the straw, staring through the humid veil without a trace of inflection. "Hello."
